Donald Trump has selected Chris Wright, a prominent figure in the oil and gas industry, as his choice to lead the US Department of Energy.
Wright, who is the founder and CEO of Liberty Energy, a company specializing in hydraulic fracturing or “fracking,” is expected to carry out Trump’s pledge to boost fossil fuel production, embodied in the campaign slogan “drill, baby, drill.”
In a statement, Trump praised Wright’s role in advancing the American Shale Revolution, which he credited with enhancing US energy independence and reshaping global energy markets. “As Secretary of Energy, Chris will drive innovation, reduce bureaucratic obstacles, and usher in a new era of prosperity and global peace,” Trump said.
A known climate change skeptic, Wright has publicly stated that he does not focus on the source of energy, as long as it is secure, affordable, and improves lives. He has also dismissed concerns over climate change, claiming, “There is no climate crisis, and we’re not in the midst of an energy transition.”
In addition to his role as Energy Secretary, Wright will be appointed to the newly formed Council of National Energy, aimed at strengthening US energy dominance by reducing regulatory barriers and boosting private sector investments.
Wright’s leadership is expected to benefit the fossil fuel industry, with Trump’s administration focused on ramping up oil and gas production rather than promoting renewable energy sources like wind power. Trump has also promised to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling, arguing it will reduce energy costs.
During his first term, Trump rolled back numerous environmental regulations and withdrew the US from the Paris climate agreement. Wright’s appointment signals a continued focus on fossil fuel production, aligning with Trump’s broader energy strategy.
