Afenyo-Markin to NDC Government: “Don’t Choose an Outsider if Babgin Is Not Retained as Speaker”

Outgoing Majority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to either retain the current Speaker, Alban Bagbin, or select a new speaker from within Parliament, rather than choosing an outsider.

In his remarks during the House’s first sitting after a long break caused by the vacant seat impasse, Afenyo-Markin expressed appreciation for Bagbin’s leadership over the past four years, highlighting his significant contributions to empowering the institution of Parliament.

“Mr. Speaker, the institutional empowerment you have given to Parliament is unmatched, and much of it is due to your leadership coming from within. If you are retained, Parliament will continue to benefit from your stewardship. However, should you be retired, and a new Speaker is appointed, that individual should come from within the House. We do not want an outsider,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

He emphasized the preference for a speaker who is already a member of Parliament, someone familiar with its workings.

Afenyo-Markin also praised Bagbin’s leadership, acknowledging the challenges and disagreements but recognizing that the Speaker’s focus on the welfare of members was a defining aspect of his tenure.

“Mr. Speaker, I commend you for your four years of leadership. Although we may have had our disagreements, it’s clear that the welfare of members has always been central to your leadership. No one can take that away from you,” he added.

Monday’s sitting, held at the Accra International Conference Centre, marks the return of Parliament as members prepare to debate pending matters before the current Parliament’s closure.
