The Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) has announced a nationwide strike, set to begin today, Monday, November 18, in response to the government’s failure to address ongoing concerns about their conditions of service.
TEWU-TUC has expressed frustration over the government’s delays in finalizing and implementing revised service conditions for workers within the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Library Authority, the Museums and Monuments Board, as well as Public Technical and Traditional Universities. These negotiations, which have been ongoing for several years, remain unresolved, leading to growing dissatisfaction among the union’s members.
The union argues that the lack of progress is unacceptable and has now resorted to industrial action as the only way to press for the necessary changes. TEWU-TUC emphasizes that the failure to resolve these issues is impacting the welfare of its members and the overall effectiveness of key educational institutions.
In response, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday, November 20, 2024, involving TEWU-TUC and other relevant stakeholders. The NLC aims to mediate the dispute and facilitate discussions to address the union’s grievances.
The strike is expected to disrupt services in the affected sectors. TEWU-TUC has made it clear that they will continue their industrial action until their demands for improved conditions of service are fully addressed. The union has called for swift action from the government to finalize and implement the revised terms.
