Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has ordered the closure of seven courts in Bawku and surrounding areas due to escalating violence in the region. The affected courts include the High Court, Circuit Court, and District Courts in Bolgatanga, as well as District Courts in Zuarungu, Zebilla, Garu, and Bongo.
The decision follows recent unrest in Bawku, which has intensified since Seidu Abagre’s controversial enskinment as Bawku Naba in February 2023, despite his title lacking legal recognition. His presence has heightened tensions between rival factions, resulting in multiple clashes and the tragic loss of 16 lives.
In an official statement released on October 29, the Judicial Secretary emphasized that the closures are intended “to ensure the safety and security of Judges, Staff, Lawyers, and Court Users.” The statement directed court registrars to secure court assets and advised all staff to prioritize their safety.
The closure remains in effect until further notice as authorities work to address the security concerns in the area.
