Following the passing of Akua Donkor, Presidential Candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), previously recorded interviews of the late politician have begun to circulate online. One such video, an interview with Zionfelix TV from October 12, 2024, features Donkor discussing her health and her plans for continuity in leadership.
In response to questions about her capacity to handle the rigorous demands of the presidency given her age and health, Donkor affirmed her readiness. “I have been experiencing health challenges for the past 10 years, but I am still alive. Even if I die today, my running mate will take over from me,” she confidently stated.
Akua Donkor passed away on October 28, 2024, at Ridge Hospital in Accra at the age of 72. Known for her humor and candid speeches, Donkor’s political journey began as an Assemblywoman for Hemang in the Ashanti Region. Her resilience was evident throughout her multiple presidential bids, despite limited financial resources.
Her political debut as an independent candidate in 2012 and another run in 2016 did not lead to victory, but she continued her efforts and qualified for the 2020 presidential election. Throughout her 2024 campaign, Donkor promised policies such as free vehicles for journalists, duty-free port services, free education, and better compensation for farmers.
A notable recent development in her campaign was the selection of Roman Fada, a broadcaster at Atinka FM and manager for highlife musician Daddy Lumba, as her running mate. In light of Donkor’s passing, Roman Fada shared in an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM that no decision has been made yet regarding the GFP’s participation in the upcoming election, now just 39 days away.
Akua Donkor’s legacy leaves a distinct mark on Ghanaian politics, highlighting her determination and unique approach to leadership. Her passing has prompted reflection on her contributions and the future direction of the Ghana Freedom Party.
