The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus has nominated Bernard Ahiafor, the Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, as the First Deputy Speaker for Ghana’s Ninth Parliament under the Fourth Republic.
The announcement was made during an NDC Parliamentary Caucus meeting on Monday, January 6, 2025, ahead of the new parliamentary term’s official commencement.
The Speaker of Parliament is supported by two Deputy Speakers, a critical arrangement designed to ensure the smooth operation of the House. In line with parliamentary rules, the two Deputy Speakers must represent different political parties to promote balance and fairness in legislative proceedings.
In a notable development, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the independent Member of Parliament for Fomena, has been re-elected as the Second Deputy Speaker. Mr. Asiamah previously held this position in the Eighth Parliament, earning widespread respect for his impartiality and leadership.
The leadership structure for the Ninth Parliament aims to foster continuity and collaboration among lawmakers, reflecting Ghana’s steadfast commitment to democratic governance.
