Woman Becomes Police Officer to Catch Her Father’s Killer, Successfully Arrests Him After 25 Years

A Brazilian woman who spent years dedicated to finding her father’s killer has finally brought justice to her family, apprehending the fugitive 25 years after his crime.

The story begins on February 16, 1999, when Givaldo José Vicente de Deus was shot in the head at close range during a dispute in a Boa Vista bar. The argument erupted between Givaldo and Raimundo Alves Gomes over a 150 Brazilian real debt (about $29 at the time). After a brief exit, Gomes returned to the bar, fatally shooting Givaldo. He then fled, evading authorities for decades despite a warrant issued for his arrest.

Givaldo left behind a grieving family, including his then nine-year-old daughter, Gislayne Silva de Deus. Although the tragedy fractured their lives, Gislayne was raised to stay on the right path. Her father had encouraged her to study and succeed, so she devoted herself to her education, all while helping her mother care for her younger siblings.

Gislayne graduated from high school at 18 and was accepted into law school. Seven years later, she became a licensed lawyer, but in 2022, her focus shifted: she decided to join the police force to pursue her father’s killer. Passing her exams, she was appointed as a State Police investigator on July 19, 2024, and quickly requested to join the Homicide Division, where she could actively pursue Gomes.

Although Gomes was sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison in 2013, his lawyers attempted appeals in 2014 and 2015, which were denied. The most recent arrest warrant, issued in 2019, meant the statute of limitations would end in 2031, so Gislayne knew time was limited. Just two months into her role as an investigator, she located him on a farm in the Nova Cidade region near Boa Vista on September 25.

“When I saw him at the police station, I told him who I was and that I was the one responsible for his arrest,” Gislayne shared. “When I told my family, everyone felt peace. We had waited for so long, and this moment finally brought us a sense of justice.”

The story of her relentless pursuit and her devotion to honoring her father has inspired millions across Brazil and South America, bringing to light the strength of love and the power of perseverance.
