The Techiman Traditional Council has strongly denied reports claiming that the convoy of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was attacked by some angry individuals in Techiman, Bono East Region.
The Asantehene had been returning from Nkoranza, where he attended the funeral of the late Nana Dudaa Kani, the Paramount Queen Mother of the Nkoranza Traditional Area, when the alleged attack occurred in Techiman, the regional capital.
Addressing the rumors at a press conference in Techiman, Nana Takyi Firi II, the Krontihene (sub-chief) and Acting President of the Techiman Traditional Council, clarified that the reports were entirely false. He emphasized that the people of Techiman and the Asantehene share a close bond. “The Techiman and Asante people are one; Nana Techimanhene and Otumfuo are from the Oyoko clan and see each other as brothers,” Nana Firi II said. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the circulating video and reiterated that there was no justification for such an attack.
He further explained that the relationship between Techiman and the Asantehene has always been cordial. “When Otumfuo’s son, the late Okatakyie Agyemang Kudom IV, the Nkoranzamanhene, passed away, Otumfuo informed Oseadeeyo Akumfi Ameyaw IV, the Techimanhene, and even paid a courtesy visit to the Techiman Traditional Council before attending the funeral in Nkoranza.”
Nana Firi II also shared that before the Asantehene’s visit to Nkoranza for the funeral on December 2, 2024, Otumfuo had communicated his intention to visit the Techimanhene for a courtesy call before proceeding. He noted that despite the absence of Nana Techimanhene, his elders ensured that Otumfuo received full support to perform the necessary traditional rites, including ceremonies at Techiman Tanoso and Fiaso on the Techiman-Nkoranza road.
The sub-chief stressed that Techiman is a cosmopolitan town that embraces people of all ethnicities, races, religions, and genders. He called on social media users to be responsible in sharing content and urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation. “There is no animosity between the people of Techiman and the Asante people. We are one people with a common destiny,” Nana Firi II concluded.
