Founder and flagbearer of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has openly criticized former President John Agyekum Kufuor for endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, ahead of the 2024 general elections.
In a recent interview on Sunday, November 17, Kufuor praised Dr. Bawumia, calling him the most suitable candidate to lead Ghana. The former president urged Ghanaians to support Bawumia, citing his economic expertise and track record as key attributes that could bolster the nation’s growth.
“Considering the present global context, I genuinely believe Ghana’s economy would witness substantial growth if Bawumia were elected as President,” Kufuor said. “With divine guidance, he is more than capable of fulfilling this promise, and I urge you to back his candidacy.”
Kufuor also highlighted Bawumia’s contributions during his presidency as part of the Bank of Ghana team under Governor Dr. Paul Acquah.
“I have observed his remarkable economic skills, which played a critical role in stabilizing our national currency during my tenure,” he added.
Alan Kyerematen’s Response
Speaking on Oyerepa TV on Monday, November 18, Alan Kyerematen expressed disappointment in Kufuor’s endorsement, arguing that it compromises the neutrality expected from a statesman of his stature.
“Kufuor is my uncle, and I hesitate to publicly criticize him,” Kyerematen began. “However, his endorsement has cast a significant shadow over his political career. His comments have sparked negative reactions and widespread criticism.”
Kyerematen warned that Kufuor’s involvement in active partisan politics could erode the respect and reverence he commands across Ghana.
“President Kufuor has long been a respected figure in Ghana. Why would he choose to engage in partisan politics in this manner? His actions are regrettable, and he is venturing into dangerous territory,” Kyerematen stated.
Despite their familial ties, Kyerematen did not hold back, noting that Kufuor’s endorsement had already provoked backlash.
“He knows exactly what he is doing, but I believe this is a mistake that could tarnish his long-standing legacy,” Kyerematen remarked.
A New Path for Kyerematen
Since breaking away from the NPP to form the Movement for Change, Kyerematen has positioned himself as a third-force alternative to the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). In light of Kufuor’s comments, he reiterated his commitment to presenting a fresh vision for Ghana that transcends partisan politics.
As the political landscape intensifies ahead of the 2024 elections, Kyerematen’s critique underscores deep divisions within Ghana’s political elite, further setting the stage for a heated contest.
