The Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has weighed in on Alan Kyerematen’s criticism of former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Kyerematen, now the flagbearer of the Movement for Change, recently took issue with Kufuor’s public endorsement of Bawumia, claiming it had tarnished the former president’s legacy as a respected statesman. According to Kyerematen, Kufuor’s support for Bawumia represented a significant “blot” on his otherwise admirable political career.
Ofosu Nkansah Dismisses Kyerematen’s Criticism
In a Facebook post on Monday, November 18, Ofosu Nkansah dismissed Kyerematen’s remarks, suggesting they were rooted in personal frustration rather than genuine political concerns.
“Kyerematen appears to be pained by Dr. Bawumia’s rise in Ghana’s political landscape, especially after he left the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to form the Movement for Change,” Ofosu Nkansah wrote.
He argued that Kyerematen’s comments reflect his discomfort with being overtaken by Bawumia in terms of political influence.
“Someone who believed he should have preceded Kufuor in prominence is bound to have issues with Dr. Bawumia surpassing him,” he added.
A Call for Focus
Ofosu Nkansah also urged Kyerematen to shift his focus away from criticizing individuals within the NPP and concentrate instead on addressing pressing national issues.
“Rather than targeting figures like Kufuor or Bawumia, Kyerematen should focus on presenting a compelling vision for Ghana,” Ofosu Nkansah suggested.
Background
The exchange follows Kufuor’s endorsement of Bawumia, where the former president praised the Vice President as the ideal candidate to lead Ghana, citing his economic expertise and past contributions. The endorsement has sparked mixed reactions, with Kyerematen’s criticism drawing significant attention.
As political tensions escalate ahead of the 2024 elections, Ofosu Nkansah’s response underscores the broader divisions within Ghana’s political space and highlights the challenges facing Kyerematen as he seeks to position his Movement for Change as a viable alternative to the NPP and the NDC.
