Retired Honorable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has been officially sworn in as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament of Ghana’s 4th Republic. This marks his second consecutive term as Speaker, a milestone he described as “a rare honor.”
Taking the oaths of office and allegiance, administered by Chief Justice Justice Mrs. Gertrude Araba Esaba Torkornoo, Speaker Bagbin expressed profound gratitude for the trust placed in him.
“With great humility, I accept the high and privileged office of the Speaker of the Ninth Parliament. I am grateful to Almighty God for His grace and mercies, allowing me to achieve this rare feat. To Him be all the praise and honor,” Bagbin remarked.
He extended special thanks to President-elect John Dramani Mahama and the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their unwavering support. He further pledged to work collaboratively with all sides of the House to ensure effective governance.
Reflecting on his previous term, Bagbin highlighted the complexities of leading a hung Parliament and the valuable lessons gained. “I now come to the Ninth Parliament not just with the background of being the longest-serving legislator, but with the experience of four years of Speakership in a very challenging hung Parliament,” he said.
He assured Members of Parliament and Ghanaians of his commitment to guiding the House with efficiency, diligence, and a steadfast focus on strengthening Ghana’s democracy. “I promise to bring all these experiences to bear in guiding this House to perform its mandate with efficiency, diligence, and above all, with a sense of being the bulwark of democracy in Ghana,” he added.
Bagbin also called on Ghanaians to engage with and support Parliament, urging them to remain hopeful for a brighter future.
As part of his official duties, Speaker Bagbin oversaw the swearing-in of the Members of Parliament-elect and supervised the election of the two Deputy Speakers. Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, the Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, was elected as the 1st Deputy Speaker, while Hon. Andrew Amoako Asiamah, the Member of Parliament for Fomena, assumed the role of 2nd Deputy Speaker.
Speaker Bagbin’s leadership promises to bring continuity and a wealth of experience to the 9th Parliament, fostering collaboration and efficiency in Ghana’s legislative process.
