Leicester City striker Jordan Ayew has been named captain of the Black Stars for Ghana’s upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Angola and Niger. The decision was made by Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, and announced at a press conference on Thursday.
Otto Addo explained that the initial plan had been for Thomas Partey to lead the team, but with his absence, the coach decided to appoint Jordan Ayew as the captain for the qualifiers. “The initiative was to make Thomas the captain to guide the team. But once he is not there, I had to speak to Kudus and make the decision to appoint Jordan as captain in Thomas’ absence,” Addo said.
The coach also revealed that he had discussions with Kudus Mohammed, Ghana’s previous captain, before finalizing the decision. “I have decided to pick Jordan as the new captain, and I have spoken with Kudus, who understands that he will grow into the role of second captain alongside Djiku,” Otto Addo added.
Jordan Ayew takes over the captaincy from Kudus Mohammed, who led the Black Stars during last month’s qualifiers against Sudan.
The Black Stars will face Angola on November 15 in Luanda, followed by a match against Niger on November 18 in Accra. Ghana is currently in third place in Group F, with two points from four matches.
