WAEC Expresses Concern Over Possible Delay of 2024 WASSCE Results Due to GH₵166m Government Debt
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has raised concerns that the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results may be delayed due to the government’s outstanding debt of GH₵166 million.
John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, revealed that the council still owes invigilators, supervisors, and script checkers over GH₵4 million. He explained to JoyNews that the government has only paid one-third of WAEC’s 2024 budget of GH₵186 million, leaving a deficit of GH₵40.4 million in arrears from previous years.
Kapi emphasized the potential impact of these arrears on the timely release of the WASSCE results. He stated, “If the government does not clear these outstanding payments, it could affect our ability to conclude our activities for the year and potentially delay the results.”
As of now, WAEC has received GH₵60.976 million from the government, representing just a third of the required budget for 2024. With the remaining two-thirds still unpaid, Kapi warned that unless the government fulfills its financial obligations, the release of the results could be postponed.
In response to WAEC’s concerns, the Ministry of Education assured the public that steps are being taken to prevent any delay. Kwasi Kwarteng, a spokesperson for the Ministry, confirmed that GH₵15 million had been recently released to WAEC, with further payments in progress.
“We have been in constant communication with WAEC,” Kwarteng stated. “We assure parents and candidates that there will be no disruption in the release of the results. While there may be outstanding payments, we are working with WAEC to ensure that everything proceeds smoothly.
