Driver’s Mate Sentenced to Four Years in Prison for Theft

A 22-year-old driver’s mate, Emmanuel Oteng, also known as “Sika Gari,” has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Abuakwa Circuit Court for stealing from a school storeroom.

Oteng broke into the storeroom of Bantama M/A Junior High School, stealing several items, including a tabletop fridge, a plastic barrel, and two metal buckets, which belonged to the school. He pleaded guilty to the charge of theft and was convicted based on his admission.

During the court proceedings, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr. Jonas Newlove Agyei presented the case to Mrs. Philomina Ansaah Asiedu, the presiding judge. He stated that the Headmaster of Bantama M/A JHS was the complainant in the case, and Oteng was a local resident.

On the morning of October 17, the complainant discovered that the window of the staff common room had been damaged upon arriving at school. After entering the room to investigate, he found that the school’s Philips tabletop fridge, valued at GH¢3,000, a plastic barrel worth GH¢600, and two metal bucket stands valued at GH¢1,200, totaling GH¢4,800, were missing.

The complainant reported the incident to the local Assembly Member. Following inquiries, Oteng was arrested at his hideout and turned over to the Suntreso Police.

During police questioning, Oteng confessed in his caution statement that he sold the stolen items to a man named Kofi Kombate at Suntreso but could not provide information on the alleged buyer’s whereabouts. After completing the investigation, Oteng was charged and brought before the court.
