Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has gracefully conceded defeat in the 2024 general elections.
In a televised address from his residence shortly after results began to emerge, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the victory of his opponent, former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for the opportunity to serve as Vice President and as a presidential candidate.
“I said during the signing of the peace pact that I was sure of two things: Ghana will win, and peace will reign,” Dr. Bawumia remarked. “The people of Ghana have spoken. They have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility.”
Emphasizing Peace and Democracy
Dr. Bawumia revealed that he had personally called Mr. Mahama to congratulate him as Ghana’s President-elect. He explained that his early concession was intended to ease tensions and reinforce Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
“It is important that the global investor community continues to believe in Ghana’s peaceful and democratic character. These are our most important assets,” he noted, reiterating the value of national peace over personal ambitions.
Reflecting on the Campaign
Dr. Bawumia expressed pride in the NPP’s campaign efforts, highlighting the party’s dedication to presenting policies and programs that addressed Ghana’s needs. “We put our best foot forward in the contest. However, the voter sometimes has other ideas, and that is democracy,” he said.
He thanked the NPP for their unwavering support and assured Ghanaians that the party would regroup and prepare for future contests.
“To our supporters, I know this outcome is disappointing, but I urge you to remain hopeful. We may have lost the battle, but not the war,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
Commitment to a Peaceful Transition
The Vice President pledged the NPP’s full cooperation in ensuring a smooth transition to the incoming government. He assured the nation of the party’s readiness to adopt a constructive approach in opposition, vowing to scrutinize government policies in the interest of Ghana.
Dr. Bawumia also took the opportunity to thank President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his family, campaign team, running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and the party’s supporters for their encouragement and dedication.
A Call for Unity
Acknowledging the critical roles played by traditional leaders, religious figures, security services, and the media, Dr. Bawumia praised their contributions to a peaceful electoral process.
In his concluding remarks, he emphasized the resilience of Ghana’s democracy and his faith in the nation’s future.
“Ghana has won,” he declared with conviction. “Thank you very much, and may God bless you and our homeland Ghana.”
Dr. Bawumia’s concession underscores his commitment to unity and democratic principles, ensuring a peaceful transition of power and solidifying his reputation as a statesman who prioritizes the nation’s welfare above personal ambitions.
