28-Year-Old Sentenced to Prison for Robbery and Theft

A 28-year-old unemployed man, Emmanuel Takyi, has been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor by the Tarkwa Circuit Court after pleading guilty to charges of theft and conspiracy to rob his former employer.

Presiding Judge Mrs. Hathia Ama Manu handed down the sentence following Takyi’s confession to both crimes. According to Police Chief Inspector Abraham Ayitey, Takyi’s victim, a gold buyer residing in Wassa Japa in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality, had previously employed him at a gold refinery shop in Wassa Dadieso, near Wassa Akropong.

Approximately two months ago, Takyi stole GH¢28,000 from the gold shop and fled to Koforidua with plans to leave the country. However, he ultimately squandered the stolen funds. He later returned to Wassa Akropong, where he conspired with an associate, identified as the witness in this case, to rob his former employer’s gold shop.

The witness, who was from the same hometown as the complainant, appeared to agree to the plan but secretly alerted the complainant through one of his employees. The police were then informed of the planned robbery and received details of Takyi’s movements, including the vehicle registration, attire, and seat number.

On September 29, 2024, the police intercepted Takyi’s vehicle at a checkpoint set up at Nkonya near Wassa Akropong. Both Takyi and his associate were apprehended, with Takyi admitting to his actions in a caution statement, explaining that he had been motivated by financial hardship.
