Cholera Outbreak in Kasoa Claims 5 Lives, Leaves 30 Hospitalized

A cholera outbreak in Kasoa has tragically claimed five lives, with 30 others currently receiving treatment at the Kasoa Polyclinic and Mother and Child Hospital. The incident has heightened concerns among local authorities, who are calling on residents to take precautionary steps to prevent further spread of the disease.

Awutu Senya East Municipal Chief Executive, Anita Love Obo Amissah, reported that three individuals succumbed to the infection on Thursday, October 31, with two additional deaths recorded on Friday afternoon. This has brought the death toll to five.

Expressing her concern, Amissah highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness and adopting healthy eating practices to mitigate the risk of cholera. She urged Kasoa residents to stay vigilant, emphasizing that personal responsibility—such as proper waste management and food hygiene—is crucial in curbing the outbreak.

In an interview with Citi FM, Amissah revealed that the Kasoa health facilities are also treating cholera cases referred from neighboring areas, including Awutu Senya West and Gomoa East Districts. She called for a unified, collaborative approach among surrounding communities to effectively manage and contain the outbreak.

The MCE commended the swift response of health authorities, applauding their efforts to treat cases promptly and control the spread. She also urged residents to remain cautious, adhere to health guidelines, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience any symptoms.

“Five people have been confirmed dead following the outbreak. The Mother and Child Hospital and the Kasoa Polyclinic have been proactive in managing the situation. I ask residents to protect themselves by consuming healthy food,” Amissah stated.

She added that health facilities have recalled staff on leave to manage the rising cases, with 30 patients still receiving care.
