Haruna Rashid, the Nasara Coordinator for the Agona West NPP Constituency and campaign manager for Parliamentary Candidate Chris Arthur, is in critical condition after being shot during a campaign clash in Agona Nyarkrom, Central Region. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. as Rashid traveled with Mr. Arthur’s convoy.
Three others were also injured in the confrontation. According to police sources, tensions arose when supporters of Chris Arthur and Cynthia Morrison, a competing candidate, encountered each other while campaigning in the same area. Reportedly, as Arthur’s convoy approached Nyarkrom Township, they encountered a roadblock, allegedly set up by Morrison’s supporters.
Attempting to reroute, the convoy was met with aggression. Chris Arthur recounted that unidentified individuals poured alcohol on their driver, causing him to lose control. Shortly afterward, two men approached the vehicle, and Rashid was shot in the ribs.
Rashid was initially taken to Agona Swedru Municipal Hospital but has since been transferred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. The Agona West NPP Constituency Chairman, Alhaji Jibri Tanko, condemned the violence, urging all supporters to refrain from intimidation tactics.
“We will not allow anyone to intimidate us in this election,” he stated.
Additionally, two supporters from Cynthia Morrison’s camp were also injured in the clash and are receiving treatment at the Agona Nyarkrom Health Center. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident as tensions remain high.
