The Asante Abuakwa Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality has remanded two brothers in custody on charges of robbery and theft.
Augustine Kofi Owusu, 28, who pleaded not guilty, has been remanded to prison and will appear in court again on November 5, 2024. His brother, 31-year-old Kwabena Nsiah, pleaded guilty and has been remanded into police custody, with a scheduled court appearance on October 31 of this year.
Their accomplice, 32-year-old Naomi Bruwaa, charged with abetment of crime, pleaded not guilty and will return to court on November 5. Another accomplice, Abenaa Pokuaa, remains at large.
Police Chief Inspector Ruth Gborson informed the court, presided over by Mrs. Philomina Ansah Asiedu, that the two brothers were illegal miners in Nweneso Number One, where the complainant, the Chief Executive Officer of Fredua Mining Company, operates.
On October 10, at approximately 2:40 PM, Owusu and his accomplice, who is still at large, ambushed two workers of the mining company, Kelvin Twumasi and Prince Adu. Armed with a gun and a cutlass, they forcibly took unrefined gold valued at GH¢120,000 and fled the scene.
The two workers reported the incident to the CEO, who subsequently informed the Hwidiem police on October 15. Following their investigation, Owusu was arrested at his hideout.
In his caution statement, Owusu denied involvement, claiming he only assisted his accomplice in collecting her pay of GH¢10,000 from the company. He alleged that his brother Nsiah had stolen the money from his room.
The prosecution stated that Owusu then led the police to arrest Nsiah, who confessed to taking GH¢5,100 from the stolen amount, as it had been a practice between him and his brother. Following the investigation, both brothers were charged and brought before the court.
