Ayisha Amidu and Jennifer Satura, both from the Captain One Golf Society’s kids project, emerged as champions in the 2024 Obuasi Open held at the Obuasi Golf Club.
Ayisha Amidu, a rising amateur golfer with a handicap of 23, secured victory in the ladies’ division with an impressive 40 points. She was closely followed by her fellow teammate, Jennifer Satura, who finished with 39 points playing off a handicap of 33. Juliet Ayisu took third place with 33 points and a handicap of 30.
In the men’s division, Maxwell Acheampong claimed the top spot with 39 points and a handicap of 9. He was followed closely by John Asiaw, who also had a handicap of 9 and returned with 38 points, edging out Joshua Amarh (handicap 7), who also scored 38 points but lost on countback.
The two girls, Ayisha and Jennifer, are beneficiaries of the Captain One Golf Society Kids Project, which aims to discover and nurture golf talent among underprivileged and vulnerable children in golfing communities across Ghana.
Hailing from Safe-Child Advocacy in Kumasi, the girls are registered with the Royal Golf Club and are trained under professional golfer Yaw Barima Okyere. Ayisha, in particular, has had a stellar year, winning several major competitions, including the Latex Foam Medal in May at the Royal Golf Club. She also placed second in the Ohum Tournament at Tafo Golf Club in Koforidua and competed in the Pan African Tournament at Nsuta Golf and Country Club.
After her victory, a delighted Ayisha expressed her excitement at winning on such a big stage: “It’s a dream come true to compete in a major tournament and win. The competition was tough, but I’m thrilled to emerge as the winner.”
She added that this win would boost her confidence for future competitions, as she continues her journey to becoming the best female golfer in Ghana. Ayisha also expressed gratitude to Captain One Golf Society for providing her with the opportunity to pursue golf and to her coach, Yaw Barimah Okyere, for his guidance and support.
Pius Ayeh Appiah, President of Captain One Golf Society, appealed to Ghanaians and corporate organizations to support their programs, which aim to provide alternative livelihoods and nurture young, talented children in Ghana through golf.
