Kenneth Ashigbey, the Convenor of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, has announced that the coalition is considering legal action against those responsible for the recent attack on journalist Erastus Asare Donkor and his colleagues in the Ashanti region.
“We are not just going to sit and wait for progress on arrests and prosecutions. We are taking proactive steps by involving the lawyers of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey to ensure we take all necessary legal measures,” he stated during an interview on the Super Morning Show on October 21, 2024.
Erastus Asare Donkor, a journalist with Joy News, and three other reporters were assaulted by a group of ten armed men in Asumenya, a community known for illegal mining activities. Donkor reported that the armed men kidnapped them and transported them to an undisclosed location in a nearby mining forest, where they endured physical assaults.
Ashigbey strongly condemned the violent act and called for the swift arrest and prosecution of the attackers, who were identified as employees of Edelmetallum Resources Limited, a local mining company.
While the police in the area invited the suspects for questioning, they reportedly refused to cooperate with the investigation.
