The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has expressed strong confidence in the party’s chances of securing a first-round victory in the upcoming December general elections.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, December 3, Mr. Kwetey ruled out the likelihood of a runoff, emphasizing the NDC’s belief in its ability to win decisively in the first round.
“We are confident of a first-round win, but ultimately, the decision lies in the hands of the Ghanaian people,” he stated, while acknowledging that the final outcome will depend on the voters’ will.
Mr. Kwetey also took the opportunity to criticize the Electoral Commission (EC), led by Jean Mensa, citing what he described as a series of operational inefficiencies. He pointed to the recent delay in special voting for the Western and Eastern Regions as a sign of deeper issues within the Commission.
“The EC under Jean Mensa claims to be the best in our history, but the facts tell a different story. From questions of neutrality and independence to the postponement of special voting in two major regions, the Commission has not shown that it is fully in control of the process,” Mr. Kwetey argued.
He further compared the current EC leadership to former chairs, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan and Charlotte Osei, suggesting that the Commission’s current performance falls short of the standards set by its predecessors.
Mr. Kwetey warned that these challenges could erode public trust in the electoral process, stressing the need for the EC to address its shortcomings to ensure a smooth and transparent election.
As the December polls approach, the NDC remains optimistic about its prospects, urging Ghanaians to exercise their democratic rights and ensure their voices are heard at the ballot box.
