At least 24 people, primarily Somali nationals, have died after two boats capsized off the coast of Madagascar, according to local authorities.
Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed efforts are underway to facilitate “the safe return of the survivors.” The two boats, carrying 70 passengers in total, were found adrift in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar’s northern coast on Saturday. Officials suspect engine failure caused the tragedy.
Fishermen in the area rescued survivors, according to a senior Somali government official who spoke to local media. Survivors revealed they were en route to the French island of Mayotte, a frequent yet perilous destination for Somali migrants seeking asylum.
Poverty and unemployment in the Horn of Africa continue to push young people to risk dangerous journeys in pursuit of a better life in Europe.
Madagascan authorities highlighted the “severe risks associated with illegal migration” and suggested the victims were migrants attempting this hazardous route.
