Las Vegas Father Killed by Police After Calling 911 to Report Intruder

A 43-year-old Las Vegas man, Brandon Durham, was fatally shot by police after calling 911 for help during a home invasion. The incident, which occurred on November 12, has sparked outrage from his family, who are demanding accountability for the officer involved.

Mr. Durham’s 15-year-old daughter, who hid in a nearby room during the incident, expressed her anger, saying the police treated her father like “the suspect, not the victim.”

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Mr. Durham reported two individuals shooting outside and attempting to break into his home. Responding officers found evidence of a disturbance, including broken windows and yelling from inside the house.

Officer Alexander Bookman, 26, entered the home with his gun drawn. Body camera footage shows him encountering Mr. Durham wrestling over a knife with a masked woman, later identified as 31-year-old Alejandra Boudreaux. Despite shouting, “Drop the knife,” Officer Bookman fired one shot at Mr. Durham, followed by five additional shots.

Mr. Durham was pronounced dead at the scene, and Ms. Boudreaux was arrested and charged with home invasion and related offenses.

Police later revealed that Mr. Durham and Ms. Boudreaux had a prior romantic relationship, though no firearms were recovered from the scene despite reports of gunfire.

Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren stated the incident is under investigation, and Officer Bookman has been placed on paid administrative leave. A lawyer representing Officer Bookman argued that while the situation was tragic, the officer had no intent to commit a crime and was performing his duties.

Mr. Durham’s family has called for Officer Bookman’s dismissal and prosecution. Their attorney criticized the police response, asserting that Mr. Durham’s death was avoidable.

The shooting has reignited calls for police reform, drawing parallels to the recent case of Sonya Massey, an Illinois woman killed by police in her home after she called 911 for help.

As public scrutiny intensifies, the incident underscores the need for clearer protocols and accountability in police responses to emergency calls.
