‘Why Not Announce Presidential Results in 36 Hours?’ – EC Responds to Timeline Queries

The Electoral Commission (EC) has pledged to announce the results of the December 7 presidential election within 72 hours after polls close. Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services, emphasized the Commission’s commitment to accuracy, transparency, and adherence to this timeline during an interview on Joy News’ PM Express.

“By convention, we work within 72 hours, and we will do our best to ensure Ghanaians know the outcome of the presidential election within this period,” Dr. Asare assured.

He explained that while the EC aims to work efficiently, every step of the process must undergo thorough checks to maintain credibility.

Multi-Step Results Process

Dr. Asare outlined the detailed process of collating results from constituencies across the nation:

  • Parliamentary election results from some constituencies may conclude as early as midnight or the early hours of the morning.
  • Presidential results are then forwarded to regional capitals, where officials review them.
  • These verified results are sent to the EC headquarters in Accra for the Chairperson to officially declare the outcome.

“The parties will be represented at all levels to ensure transparency and credibility throughout the process,” he noted.

2020 Lessons Shape Current Plan

Reflecting on the 2020 elections, Dr. Asare acknowledged that while the EC aimed to announce results within 24 hours, logistical challenges extended the timeline to 48 hours. For this election, the Commission has adopted a more cautious 72-hour framework, while remaining open to earlier announcements.

“If we can get everything done in less than 24 hours, why not? If we can conclude within 36 hours, we’ll go ahead. But within 72 hours, we are committed to delivering,” he stated.

Confidence in Preparedness

Dr. Asare reassured Ghanaians that the EC’s preparations are robust and designed to handle the logistical challenges of transmitting results, even from remote constituencies.

“Our systems are in place, and we will follow convention to ensure Ghanaians receive the results they deserve,” he affirmed.

The EC has prioritized a balance between efficiency and thoroughness, aiming to ensure the results are credible and satisfactory to all stakeholders.
