Akufo-Addo Regrets Appointing Ken Ofori-Atta, Says Dr. Nduom

Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, Founder and President of Group Nduom, has claimed that President Nana Akufo-Addo regrets his decision to work with former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. According to Dr. Nduom, President Akufo-Addo initially believed that Mr. Ofori-Atta was the ideal candidate to lead the nation’s finance ministry, yet the outcome did not meet expectations.

Dr. Nduom further alleged that Mr. Ofori-Atta, a cousin of the President, was appointed to the finance ministry due to his role in raising funds for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2016 and 2020 election campaigns. “He is the one the President trusted to raise money for his campaigns, and then, when they won power, they entrusted him with running the economy,” Dr. Nduom explained. However, he noted that the move has proven the saying, “it’s not necessarily those who help bring you to power who will ensure success once you get there.”

Dr. Nduom expressed his belief that the President regrets entrusting the nation’s economy to Mr. Ofori-Atta, whose background as an investment analyst did not translate into effective management of Ghana’s financial sector. He went on to claim that the country’s financial system has been “set on the path of destruction” and called for accountability, suggesting that those responsible should face legal consequences.

The former Finance Minister has faced widespread criticism from opposition parties and citizens who blame him for economic mismanagement. Recent data supports these claims, showing a downturn in Ghana’s economic performance over recent years. The World Bank also reported that Ghana’s public debt has surged due to fiscal policies implemented in response to external shocks, which limited access to international financial markets. This situation has resulted in debt distress, diminishing foreign reserves, and rising inflation.

Although Dr. Nduom is not running in this year’s election, he emphasized that his primary concern is to advocate for the well-being of Ghanaians. His focus, he says, is on creating job opportunities and helping the populace become self-sufficient, which is why he continues to raise such issues. He shared these comments in his weekly Facebook Live program titled “Disappointed but not Discouraged.”
