TEWU Set to Strike Monday Over Delay in Implementing Conditions of Service

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trade Union Congress-Ghana (TUC) has announced a potential strike action due to frustrations over the protracted delays in finalizing Conditions of Service agreements for their members in several key sectors. The affected members include staff within the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Library Authority (GhLA), Museums and Monuments Board, Public Technical Universities, and Public Universities.

TEWU stated that negotiations for improved service conditions have been ongoing for several years with no resolution. In a recent statement, the Union expressed disappointment over the government agencies’ failure to conclude the process despite repeated efforts, saying that members had hoped for an end to the discussions long ago. Instead, they have faced nearly four years of bureaucratic delays.

As the new academic year continues, TEWU pointed out that the unresolved conditions are particularly affecting members engaged in the admissions process for first-year students. The Union emphasized that their members’ patience is wearing thin, warning that if the government does not act promptly, an indefinite strike will commence on November 18, 2024.

Calling on stakeholders to take immediate action, TEWU stressed the need for a swift and satisfactory resolution to prevent disruptions in the education sector. They urged authorities to provide a timely response to ensure stability in educational institutions nationwide.
