Supreme Court to Issue Ruling on Vacant Parliamentary Seats Today

The Supreme Court is set to resume hearings and deliver a ruling today, Monday, November 11, regarding the case of vacant parliamentary seats. The case, which was adjourned on October 30, addresses the fate of four Members of Parliament (MPs) who contested as independents in the recent general election.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo had previously directed Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to submit the relevant documents by Wednesday, November 6, after Speaker Bagbin’s lawyer, Thaddeus Sory, requested more time for consultations and gathering the necessary instructions.

In the last session, Attorney General Godfred Dame argued that Speaker Bagbin should be excluded from the proceedings, asserting that his office holds the mandate to represent public servants in cases related to constitutional interpretation. Dame urged the court to move forward with interpreting the constitutional aspects of the case, without the Speaker’s participation.
