Ecuador Withdraws Recognition of the ‘SADR’

The Republic of Ecuador has officially suspended its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), a separatist entity that it initially acknowledged in 1983 and later established an embassy for in 2009.

Ecuador’s Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, communicated this decision to her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, during a recent phone call. She also confirmed that a formal notification has been dispatched to the SADR’s representation in Quito.

This action is part of ongoing efforts led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to reinforce Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, promoting the Autonomy Plan as the exclusive framework for resolving the regional dispute.

Ecuador’s withdrawal of recognition signifies a significant shift in its diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Morocco.
