President Akufo-Addo is poised to inaugurate the Flower Pot Interchange, a major infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity between the northern and southern corridors of the Accra-Tema Motorway.
The 802-meter dual carriageway, constructed by China Railway Engineering Ghana, features a modern overpass at the Spintex Road Flower Pot roundabout. It is expected to significantly enhance traffic flow in densely populated areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, and Spintex, reducing travel times for commuters.
Despite these benefits, James Amoo Gottfried, Director of Urban Roads, has cautioned that the interchange alone may not completely eliminate congestion in the area.
“We foresee that while the interchange will improve efficiency, congestion will still occur, especially near Cantonments and the Giffard Road Interchange,” Mr. Gottfried noted.
To address these challenges, plans are underway to introduce new exits and traffic dispersal routes to accommodate increased vehicle volumes.
“At the ground level of the overpass, we are preparing to create another exit into Cantonments to ease traffic flow. Most vehicles approaching the Giffard Road Interchange tend to turn right, loop around, and head left into Cantonments. We aim to relieve this congestion by providing direct access,” he explained.
The project represents a significant step toward improving Accra’s road network, but as Mr. Gottfried emphasized, additional measures will be crucial to fully address the city’s traffic challenges.
