Nigeria and the United Kingdom announced a new strategic partnership on Monday, aiming to foster economic growth, strengthen security efforts, and deepen cultural ties between the two nations.
During a joint press conference in Abuja, Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy outlined the objectives of the partnership, which includes bolstering trade and investment, enhancing security cooperation, and leveraging the close personal ties shared between both countries.
“Our goal is to advance economic ties through investment and trade, creating substantial growth, generating jobs, and adding local value for both Nigeria and the UK,” Tuggar stated.
Lammy, making his first official visit to Africa as Foreign Secretary, underscored Britain’s dedication to a long-term relationship with Nigeria. “This partnership framework encapsulates the wide array of initiatives we’re undertaking together,” he noted, highlighting key areas such as economic development, climate action, and addressing security threats.
Lammy also emphasized the importance of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK, recognizing its role in fostering cultural exchange and economic collaboration. He noted that the community serves as a bridge, strengthening personal connections and creating opportunities for increased cooperation between the two nations.
