A Nigerian investigative panel has cleared transgender socialite Bobrisky of claims that she didn\u2019t serve her full jail term for currency abuse, finding instead that she did receive special privileges while incarcerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bobrisky, whose real name is Idris Okuneye, was sentenced to six months in prison for “naira abuse” after she tossed banknotes into the air during a film premiere in April. The panel found that, while she served her sentence in a male prison, she was granted frequent visits from family and friends, was housed in a furnished single cell equipped with a humidifier, television, fridge, and even had access to a phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The panel was established by the Ministry of Interior to investigate allegations of bribery made by social media influencer Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan. He claimed that officials accepted bribes to drop money laundering charges against Bobrisky, which she denied. As a result of these claims, two senior prison officials were suspended last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The panel concluded that further investigations are needed to determine whether Bobrisky’s special treatment was the result of corrupt practices by prison staff. It also noted that sending her, a first-time offender, to a maximum-security facility was a violation of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The act of throwing money, known as “spraying,” is a common practice at Nigerian weddings and celebrations, but it is technically illegal since the notes may fall to the ground and be trampled. Although the maximum punishment for this offense is six months in jail, prosecutions have been rare until this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following her release in August, a viral video surfaced featuring a voice allegedly resembling Bobrisky’s, claiming she had paid $9,000 (\u00a37,000) to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to have the money laundering charges dismissed, which led to the investigation. Bobrisky has denied that the voice in the video was hers and also rejected allegations that she paid large sums to secure a flat near the prison where she purportedly served her sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
