President-elect Donald Trump announced that he has chosen Pete Hegseth, a Fox News commentator and former Army National Guard officer, as his nominee for Secretary of Defense. Hegseth, who has publicly criticized “woke” policies within the military, would be responsible for implementing Trump\u2019s vision of a leaner, less politically progressive Department of Defense if confirmed by the Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hegseth, 44, has been vocal about his opposition to current diversity and inclusion policies that have gained traction within the Pentagon. His nomination signals Trump\u2019s intent to prioritize a culture shift within military leadership. Hegseth has specifically criticized General C.Q. Brown, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, accusing him of promoting progressive policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, Trump praised Hegseth as \u201ctough, smart, and a true believer in America First,\u201d saying, \u201cWith Pete at the helm, America\u2019s enemies are on notice. Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hegseth, a NATO skeptic, has also argued that China poses an imminent threat to U.S. interests and has criticized NATO allies for what he sees as insufficient contributions to collective defense. In his book, Hegseth questioned the promotion of General Brown, attributing it to racial considerations rather than qualifications, which he claimed have become a divisive issue within the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
