Officials now expect output to reach around 650,000 tons, though the International Cocoa Organization projects closer to 500,000 tons.

This resurgence follows a period of global supply deficits fueled by similar issues in Ivory Coast, the leading cocoa producer, driving cocoa prices to record levels. Ghanaian farms are now showing healthier cocoa pods thanks to improved rainfall, sunshine, and timely application of fertilizers and pesticides. Abdul-Majid Mumuni, head of Cocobod’s cocoa health division in Ghana’s southeast, remarked, “The crop is amazing; you can count not less than 50 pods per tree.”

Farmers are already seeing promising results. In Asamankese district, for instance, a 72-hectare farm group has harvested 500 bags since the season’s start in September—compared to 820 bags in the entire 2023/24 season—with hopes of reaching 2,000-2,500 bags if favorable conditions persist.

However, concerns remain about risks from black pod disease, illegal mining, and persistent smuggling. Ghana lost over a third of its cocoa output to smuggling last season, prompting Cocobod to increase the farmgate price by nearly 45% and introduce a new funding model. Under this system, global traders must prepay part of their cocoa purchases, aiming to reduce bean trafficking. While the initiative may deter smuggling, some buyers worry that the limited funding could slow purchases and inadvertently encourage smuggling.

With cocoa trees thriving and farmers cautiously optimistic, Ghana is poised to restore its position in the global cocoa market, despite the challenges ahead.

Ghana’s cocoa production is anticipated to bounce back in the 2024/25 crop season, bolstered by favorable weather and improved agricultural practices, according to local farmers, Cocobod officials, and buyers.
